About Kansas City Chassis Pool

For several years, draymen in Kansas City have faced persistent challenges with chassis-related issues. These challenges encompass various concerns, including the utilization of older equipment with bias-ply tires, inventory shortages, and limited choices of suitable chassis. Many of us can relate to the frustration of our drivers arriving at the LPKC, only to find that the available chassis cannot be used for the intended steamship line.

In an effort to address this issue, draymen have found that investing in private chassis is a potential solution, enabling them to utilize these private chassis for any steamship line. This solution has inspired the conception of the Kansas City Chassis Pool (KCCP), an innovative concept that facilitates the utilization of private chassis without the need for individual equipment investments.

The pervasive nature of the chassis issue has prompted extensive discussions at various industry gatherings, such as the IANA conference, JOC meetings in Chicago, and our own Intermodal Association of Kansas City meetings. Regrettably, these discussions have failed to yield any definitive solutions. Consequently, the local consensus has emerged, urging a proactive approach to finding our own solutions, which is where the KCCP comes into play.

The KCCP is envisioned as a privately-run gray pool, exclusive to members only. It comprises state-of-the-art equipment, including brand new 20-40 combo sliders and 40' gooseneck chassis with radial tires and auto inflation capabilities. It is worth noting that the adoption of these chassis has resulted in substantial cost reductions associated with road service repairs. Moreover, the time saved, as a result of drivers no longer having

to wait in the roadability line at the rail, has been equally significant.

We firmly believe that the KCCP represents a positive step forward, and with the ongoing support of the drayage community, it holds the potential to become a highly viable option for meeting our chassis needs.
